1. Who are you, and what’s your position at Little Giant?
Liam Coxon, Senior UX/UI Designer.
2. What made you want to work with us?
Little Giant was my first choice agency in New Zealand. I love the work and the vibes coming out of this place. There’s no smoke without fire - awards, growth and smiles come from being awesome, and I want a slice.
3. What are you most excited to achieve here?
Collaborating on some brilliant work, wowing clients and colleagues, and being in with a shout of a cheeky award or two.
4. What was your journey like to get you where you are?
A circuitous one. I studied Linguistics at University in London back in 2005–8. Then, because nobody hires an English graduate in a recession, I worked in a theatre in the West-End for a time – my greatest achievement being a successful sale of a programme to Alec Baldwin. Then I took a job as a salesman/marketeer/engineer/dogsbody for a point-of-sale equipment company in Bournemouth. I spent a couple of years learning the value of hard work, initiative – and crucially – the value that job satisfaction (or lack thereof) brings.
In 2011 I decided to follow my dreams and go all in to retrain as a designer. Thankfully, it worked out, and shortly after I got a couple of internships and then secured a job at a Google in-house vendor agency called Toaster. I’ve been working in digital agencies ever since. I moved to New Zealand in 2015 and I’m loving life over here – absolutely no plans to go back.
5. Who in your life inspires you?
One of my best mates from home is a social worker, dealing with children in troubled families. Whenever I’m down about a bad day at work I just think about the way he goes about his truly difficult job, and it inspires me to get on with it.
6. What do you consider your greatest achievement to date and why?
Putting everything on the line to retrain as a designer. It was the scariest thing I’ve ever done, and I don’t think anyone (apart from me) truly believed it would work out. Six months after I started the course I secured a job at Google, and the respect of a lot of doubters.
7. What are you best known for?
I love a good forced march in the wilderness. I’m known for ‘encouraging’ friends and family to go outside their comfort zones on a hike.
8. What do you know is true that no one else agrees on?
Pistachio is hands-down the best ice cream flavour.
9. What book do you think everyone in the team should read?
A Long Walk to Freedom - Nelson Mandela. The world would certainly be a better place if everyone took some the learnings from this autobiography – tolerance, optimism and forgiveness.
10. If you could throw a parade party of any theme here in the office, what type would it be?
A Star Trek party would really sort the targs from the tribbles.
