At Little Giant we only use opensource code and software when we’re designing solutions for our clients. We are passionate in our belief that every business should invest in digital solutions that are based on opensource technology, whether this be through us or another agency.
Proprietary software locks a client to a single supplier, and removes any motivation for the supplier to act in the best interest of the client. With proprietary software you don't own your own digital asset, your agency does and essentially just lease it off them with a monthly fee.
We believe our clients should be free to take what we have created for them and move it to another provider if they so wish, we want our clients to choose us because of our excellent work and quality service, we don't like the idea of locking in a client using technology.
We want to create an asset for our clients, that improves the value of their business. We believe the best way to do this is using opensource software.
Proprietary software vs Opensource
In regards to website design & development
Proprietary software will cost you more money and limit your flexibility. Between the purchase price of the software itself, the exorbitant cost of mandatory virus protection, the ongoing support and upgrade costs and the fact that you will be locked into using it, proprietary software can become a real problem for your business long term. Opensource beats proprietary in this regard every time.
Which is more likely to be better, a software package created by a handful of developers, or a software package created by thousands of developers? Just as there are countless developers and users working to improve the security of opensource software, there are also just as many developers innovating new features and enhancements to those products. It is simply not possible for a single firm using proprietary software to keep pace with a global community of developers.
With closed source (proprietary) software there is no guarantee your agency or provider is keeping the software secure and adhering to web standards. Proprietary software is closed from public view so no one outside the agency that owns the software has the faintest clue how many bugs it may contain. With the worldwide development community constantly scrutinizing opensource software you can rest assured that it’s going to be continually improved and optimised.
With opensource software you’re freeing your business from being locked-in to the services of the vendor who owns the proprietary software. Many of our clients came to us initially because they were at the mercy of a proprietary vendor. You don’t want to be stuck paying monthly license fees for a product which can’t achieve what you need. What happens if the relationship with your agency has breaks down and you’re using proprietary software? Your only option is to throw away your entire investment to date and start again. Trust us when we say that this happens a lot in our industry.
If you request any custom or advanced functionality we can take relevant opensource code and tweak it to suit our your needs. Since our code is open it’s simply a matter of modifying it to add the functionality you want. If a proprietary software doesn’t contain the particular functionality you require by default either a) you won't be able to have that functionality or b) you will likely be charged a huge fee to build the functionality from scratch into the proprietary solution. Either way, it’s not ideal.
